Farmer Organizations

The inclusion of smallholder farmers in value chains has been long been recognised as a pathway to sustainable development of rural communities. There are smallholder farmers that directly engaged in the project. In order to maximize their involvement, the project engages with their organizations.

Partner coffee organizations from Sultan Kudarat share insights about IVC project

Coffee Farmers Association of Hinalaan (COFAH)

COFAH is located in a higher elevation area of Kalamansig. It is located at Sitio Sorong, Barangay Hinalaan, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. The association is 13 kms away from the Municipal Hall of Kalamansig via the concrete paved road going to the neighboring municipality Senator Ninoy Aquino. A lot of coffee trees and ridges could be seen on the side of the road going to Barangay Hinalaan. COFAH usually conducts their activities in one of the rooms of the barangay hall since the association does not have its own building yet. There are no cellular network/signals available in the barangay thus the association usually contacts their peers through a “piso-wifi” or by doing house to house visits to relay information or news from the association.

COFAH was established on July 17, 2022 and was duly registered to the Department of Labor and Employment as an association last February 26, 2023 and has a total of 57 members. Its main activities are coffee trading and consolidation of GCBs from the members and non-members.

COFAH is closely associated with Barangay Hinalaan. The association’s president is currently the Councilor for Infrastructure and one of the new members of the association is also one of the Barangay Councilors. As a newly established association, they are mostly active during September until February which is the harvest season for coffee.

Nuling Coffee Growers Association (NCGA)

Nuling Coffee Growers Association (NCGA) is situated in a relatively flat and plain part of Lebak. It is located at Barangay Nuling, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat which is also known for rice fields. The association is 7.9 kms away from the Municipal Hall, which requires traversing the narrow and unpaved roads in the middle of the rice fields. They have been granted access to one of the buildings of the barangay in which the organization will hold its future activities.

NCGA was established in August 22, 2017 and was duly registered to the Department of Labor and Employment as an association last March 31, 2021 having a total of 75 members. Some of the members were affected by the landslide caused by Typhoon Paeng last October 2022, thus most of the association activities are related to planting, maintenance, and rejuvenation of coffee.

NCGA has close ties with the barangay officials of Nuling. NCGA’s president is also the current barangay councilor. They are also supported by the ex barangay captain who acts as their consultant and the current barangay captain of Nuling. Both of them attend some of the association activities. Lastly, their current secretary is a female religious leader who assists the president during their activities.
